The Scorpions have confirmed they are pursuing further investigations into Deputy President Jacob Zuma's financial adviser, Schabir Shaik.

They are reportedly probing Zuma's role in an alleged attempt to secure a R500 000-a-year bribe from a company that successfully bid for a R6-billion contract to supply the navy with Corvettes.

"I have not confirmed or denied that the deputy president is being investigated," said Scorpions spokesperson Sipho Ngwema.

He confirmed that the unit had lodged papers with the Durban High Court to secure Shaik's co-operation in further investigations into the arms deal.

Ngwema could not elaborate

This was in addition to the current charges against Shaik relating to his possession of secret cabinet documents on the arms deal.

Ngwema could not elaborate on reports this week that the Scorpions had summoned Shaik to answer questions on links between Zuma and companies connected to the arms deal.

Zuma wasn't available for comment. His office has reportedly described the allegations as "baseless, mischievous and unfortunate".
