Johannesburg - Bulelani Ngcuka, the national director of public prosecutions, has confirmed that he will be leaving his job.

SABC news reported that Ngcuka announced this in a meeting with staff of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Pretoria on Thursday. He submitted his resignation earlier this month, asking President Thabo Mbeki to respond by the end of the month.

Bridgette Mabandla, the justice minister, and Cheryl Gillwald, her deputy, were also present at the meeting.

Government sources told Die Burger earlier this week that if the president releases Ngcuka from his duties, an acting director will probably fill the position.
