Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana is holding off on taking legal action against National Prosecuting Authority head Bulelani Ngcuka and former justice minister Penuell Maduna.

Ngcuka and Maduna have apologised publicly for derogatory personal statements they made about Mushwana after he released his findings on a complaint by Deputy President Jacob Zuma about the NPA and its head.

Maduna sent Mushwana an SMS of apology, while Ngcuka apologised to the people of South Africa for losing his temper with Mushwana.

A statement by the public protector's office said that as parliament had appointed a committee to consider the report, it might not be appropriate to consider legal steps at this stage.

The process should be allowed to take its course without interference or perceptions of influence. Once it had been completed, Mushwana would decide whether action was necessary.

The committee begins work today.
