On June 29, the Daily News published a report on the trial of Mr Shane Jaipal, who is accused of setting alight Mrs Argentina Loutsaris.

The article wrongly reported that presiding Judge Hillary Squires told Jaipal not to celebrate too soon until he (Squires) had made his judgment. After Squires adjourned the trial, Jaipal said to supporters: "I am free, I am free". After the article was published, Squires told the Daily News that he did not make the comments.

The Daily News accepts Squires's bona fides and regrets the error.
