Judge Hilary Squires has provisionally set aside Wednesday afternoon for sentencing in the Schabir Shaik fraud and corruption case.

Arguments in mitigation and aggravation of sentencing were completed at lunchtime of Tuesday.

Shaik's counsel, Francois van Zyl, asked the court to impose a lesser sentence than the prescribed minimum for his client.

Prosecutor Billy Downer asked for a longer term than the minimum. *1

Last week Shaik was found guilty of two charges of corruption and one of fraud relating to his relationship with deputy president Jacob Zuma.

Squires said that sentencing was provisionally set down for 2.15pm on Wednesday.

If not, it would be at 10am on Thursday.

*1 I think it should be the minimum on each count, but to run consecutively (or cumulatively) and not concurrently.
