Police and prosecuting authorities have been keeping mum over whether a charge of rape was pending against axed deputy president Jacob Zuma, before an expected public statement from Zuma tomorrow.

Their silence follows newspaper reports yesterday suggesting that the police had recommended in their docket that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) should charge Zuma with rape.

The NPA said it was still studying the docket.

The Sunday Independent reported that Zuma himself expected to be charged tomorrow. "Obviously, either scenario - that he will be charged or not - remains a possibility until he is actually charged or is not," Zuma's adviser and friend Mo Shaik was quoted as having said.
