President Thabo Mbeki steered away from party political issues during an imbizo in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

Mbeki’s first public appearance in the province since he fired his deputy Jacob Zuma in June was seen as a test to public sentiment after the wave of rebellion from Zuma’s supporters.

A handful of Zuma supporters who turned up at the event were kept at bay by the tight security personnel.
