The ANC says it accepts the decision taken 18 months ago by President Thabo Mbeki "to release" then Deputy President Jacob Zuma from his duties in government following due consideration of the ruling of the Shaik trial.

In a statement from secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe, the ruling movement said it noted comments by Judge Hilary Squires regarding the incorrect attribution of a phrase relating to the supposed relationship between Zuma’s business adviser Schabir Schaik and Zuma.

Squires said the term "generally corrupt relationship" had not been used by him in the June 2005 judgment.

"This issue once again highlights the need for all members of society to respect the judiciary and pay due attention to its rulings. This applies equally to the decisions of the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Constitutional Court and all other courts."

"The recent comments by Judge Squires should prompt reflection and critical self-examination among the media, commentators and others involved in disseminating information across society."

"Even as it reports on Judge Squires’ comments and attendant issues, the media is called upon to ensure that the decisions of the judiciary are accurately and correctly represented," said the secretary general.
