Convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik took the news of his failed appeal bid "with brave dignity" - and, later, laughed and joked with his family.

"He didn't break down," Shaik's brother Mo yesterday told The Star.

Mo Shaik said he and Shaik's family had gone to see him at the Durban-Westville Prison to break the news to him, as well as to discuss "our possible options".

"His 15-year sentence is shockingly harsh and we are looking at what options we have in that regard," he said.

Earlier, Mo Shaik said his brother had prepared for yesterday's judgment with prayer and fasting.

"We knew this day would come … and the fact is that he's not in prison for murder, he's not in there for rape.

"Today may be the end of our legal options, but it's not the end of the world.

"It's not the end of hope." *1

*1      Hope springs eternal.

But with a little lateral thinking surely something (legal) can be arranged.
